How to Setup a VPN

The following instructions are for setting up a VPN under Windows XP. All Windows operating systems are very similar to this. For information on how to setup a vpn connection on a Linux or MAC os refer to your operating system documentation. There is also an abundant information on the web.

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Double Click Network Connections
  3. In the left hand side under Network Tasks select Create a new connection
  4. This will start the VPN wizard. Just click Next to continue.
  5. On the New Connection Type step select Connect to my network at my workplace and click next.
  6. On the Network Connection step select Virtual Private Network connection and click next.
  7. On the Connection Name step choose any name you would like to associate with the connection. This is the name that the connection will be displayed as under Network Connections. For example ISKM Class LAN might be a good choice.
  8. On the Public Network step select Do not dial the initial connection.
  9. Type vpn2.ccs.uconn.edu in the text box provided for the Host name or IP address on the VPN Server Selection dialog.
  10. That's it! Now you will be presented with a dialog box for you user name and password to the VPN. Your instructor will provide you with these credentials. Anytime you need to connect to the VPN just open Network Connections and then click the VPN name you just created to connect.
